God is always present, but our attention is not always directed toward Him. Responsibilities, fears, desires, and distractions can fill our awareness until we move through the day with little thought of the Lord who remains near.
David wrote, “I keep my eyes always on the LORD.” This was an intentional act of faith. He chose to remember God’s presence and allow that truth to shape how he faced uncertainty, opposition, responsibility, and worship.
Setting the Lord before you turns your attention toward the One who is already there. After pouring out your heart and becoming still, you intentionally remember: the Lord is here, He knows me completely, and I am not alone.
God’s Presence Is a Truth, Not a Feeling
There may be moments in prayer when God’s nearness feels unmistakable. At other times, you may feel distracted, emotionally tired, or uncertain. The absence of a strong feeling does not mean that God has withdrawn.
Scripture—not emotion—is the foundation of our confidence. Jesus promised to remain with His people, and the Holy Spirit dwells within those who belong to Christ. We do not need to produce a sensation or create a spiritual experience to make God present.
Setting the Lord before you means choosing to believe what God has revealed, even when your emotions do not immediately agree. You can rest in His presence because He is faithful, not because you have achieved the right state of mind.
Feelings may accompany fellowship with God, but they are not the measure of it. The simple act of turning toward Him in faith is meaningful.
A Simple Way to Set the Lord Before You
This movement is a gentle way of directing your attention toward Jesus and remembering that He is near.
- Recall the promise of Scripture: the Lord is with you.
- Quietly say, “Jesus, You are here.”
- If it helps you focus, imagine Jesus beside you—present, attentive, and faithful to the character revealed in Scripture.
- Remember that you have nothing to accomplish, perform, or prove. You are welcomed by grace.
- Remain with Him for a few moments. Let your attention rest upon who He is rather than upon what you hope to feel.
- If your thoughts wander, gently return to the words, “I have set the Lord before me.”
Imagination can help focus your attention, but it should remain guided by Scripture. Details you picture can be siginificant. Record all details The purpose is simply to remember the biblical truth of Christ’s presence and enjoy fellowship with Him.
His Presence Changes Our Perspective
David connected setting the Lord before him with stability: “With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” His confidence did not come from an easy life or the absence of trouble. It came from remembering who stood with him.
Awareness of God’s presence does not make every difficulty disappear. It changes how we face what remains. Fear no longer speaks as though we are alone. Uncertainty no longer has the final word. Even in grief or waiting, we can remember that the Lord is faithful and near.
This awareness also shapes ordinary moments. We can set the Lord before us while working, caring for family, making decisions, entering difficult conversations, or resting at the end of the day. Fellowship with God is not limited to a designated prayer time. His presence accompanies us throughout our lives.
The more often we turn our attention toward Him, the more naturally our thoughts, choices, and responses can be shaped by His character and truth.
A Prayer for Awareness of God’s Presence
“Lord Jesus, you have called me to walk with you.
Open my heart to feel your close presence today.
Take my mind, my will, and my whole heart.
Bind me to your friendship so I never stray.Ignite my soul with the fire of your Holy Spirit.
Help me rest in your love and hear your gentle voice.
May my life stay closely joined to yours at all times,
Finding my peace and joy in your holy will. Amen.“
